Beautiful Dartmoor
with all of her soul-stirring colours and moods is my inspiration for
today. I love to walk on the moor and go for picnics with my children.
It's got my heart for sure! My paternal grandparents grew up in
Princetown on the high moor. A wild and changeable place which can be
inaccessible in deep winter snow. The visitor centre there is wonderful
with exhibits about the geography, history and legends of Dartmoor http://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/visiting/vi-planningyourvisit/vi-infocentres/vi-highmoorlandcentre. My
great Grandfathers Samuel and Hubert both worked at the prison. Samuel
was called out to attend the scene of the now infamous motorcycle
accident that legend says was caused by the Hairy Hands of Dartmoor!
Whoaah! The story goes that a pair of ghostly hairy hands appeared on
the motor cycle's handlebars and pulled the cycle off the road. The
driver who was the prison Dr was instantly killed but the 2 ladies in
the side car reported witnessing the ghoulish apparition. I grew up
with ghost stories and legends like these about Dartmoor. Read more about Dartmoor Legends here http://www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/hairy_hands.htm . I even used
to make up my own as a child. See you tomorrow!
